The Manila Electric Co., the country largest power distributor better known as Meralco, has launched a Competitive Selection Process (CSP) to secure 200 megaWatts of baseload renewable energy capacity, strengthening compliance with its Renewable Portfolio Standards obligations and signaling fresh momentum for green power procurement.
The CSP follows the Department of Energy’s issuance of a Certificate of Conformity on December 4, clearing the bidding activity under Meralco’s latest DOE-approved Power Supply Procurement Plan. Through its Bids and Awards Committee for power supply agreements, Meralco invited generation companies to submit Expressions of Interest by January 6.
The timeline is already mapped out. A pre-bid conference is scheduled for January 15, while bid submissions close on February 16, setting the stage for a competitive, transparent auction. The resulting four-year power supply agreement will cover Meralco’s 200-MW baseload requirement starting January 26, subject to approval by the Energy Regulatory Commission.
“This CSP is consistent with Meralco’s ongoing efforts to expand its supply portfolio sourced from renewable energy sources whilst securing RPS compliance through a competitive and transparent bidding process,” said Atty. Jose Ronald V. Valles, Meralco senior vice president and head of regulatory management.
The latest procurement builds on Meralco’s broader sustainability push. The utility has already contracted 1,536 MW of renewable energy capacity from various suppliers, exceeding its original 1,500-MW target. With continued strategic sourcing, renewables are projected to account for 22 percent of Meralco’s total supply portfolio by 2030, underscoring the company’s long-term commitment to cleaner, more resilient power.
Industry observers say the tender could attract solar, wind, and hydro developers seeking long-term contracts, while reinforcing price discovery discipline and investor confidence as the Philippines accelerates energy transition goals nationwide amid rising demand and policy support nationwide.
