SMC defends Bulacan airport project amid online doubt

San Miguel Corp. (SMC) said land development work for the New Manila International Airport in Bulacan is progressing and follows international standards, with global dredging firm Boskalis Westminster continuing to support the project.

Boskalis said it remains engaged with SMC in a technical and advisory role and is aligned with ensuring that the works meet internationally recognized standards.

SMC said the airport’s land development complies with the Environmental and Social Performance Standards of the International Finance Corp. (IFC), which set strict requirements on project design, monitoring, risk management, and community protection. The company said these standards go beyond typical local regulations.

The firm added that the project is based on detailed hydrological studies, independent engineering reviews, and ongoing environmental monitoring. It also includes long-term flood-control measures and river cleanup and rehabilitation programs in Bulacan and nearby provinces, carried out at no cost to the government.

SMC said it has committed hundreds of billions of pesos to build the airport and remains focused on completing the project responsibly and in line with global best practices.

The company also dismissed online posts questioning the project’s viability, saying these do not reflect actual progress on the ground and contain misleading information. SMC said it has asked Meta to review pages that repeatedly spread inaccurate claims while hiding their identity, in line with the platform’s policies.
