Manila container terminal hits record volume in 2025

The Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) handled a record three million container units in 2025, the first time it has reached this level in a single year, the terminal said on Monday.

The milestone was achieved on December 22, when MICT handled a container from the vessel Ever Bliss, operated by Evergreen Marine Corp., carrying cargo for Universal Robina Corp.

MICT chief executive officer Christian Lozano said the record shows the terminal’s ability to manage higher cargo volumes while maintaining service quality, especially during the busy peak season.

The increase in volume followed continued investments in equipment and infrastructure throughout the year. These included the use of hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes, additional terminal tractors, and initial tests of electric terminal tractors as part of the terminal’s modernization efforts.

Construction is ongoing on MICT’s eighth berth, which will feature a 300-meter quay and a 12-hectare combined quay and yard area. About 6.5 hectares of the site are already in use. Once completed, the new berth will be able to handle large container ships with capacities of up to 18,000 TEUs. Three new quay cranes are expected to be delivered by 2027.

After the expansion, MICT’s annual handling capacity is projected to increase to 3.5 million TEUs.

MICT handles about 70 percent of container traffic at the Port of Manila and remains the country’s largest and busiest container terminal, serving as a key gateway for international trade.

International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) has operated MICT since winning a 25-plus-25-year concession in 1988. Since then, the terminal’s annual capacity has increased fivefold, supported by expanded equipment and the shift to a real-time, integrated terminal control system.
