PE2, Climate Change Commission plan joint push on energy efficiency

The Philippine Energy Efficiency Alliance (PE2) and the Climate Change Commission (CCC) have met to discuss working together to help the Department of Energy promote energy efficiency as a key climate change strategy.

PE2 president Alexander Ablaza said the talks come as more than 200 countries back a global push to double energy efficiency gains by 2030. He cited projections showing that faster improvements in energy efficiency could cut global energy use while supporting economic growth and population increases. Ablaza stressed that energy efficiency and conservation need wider adoption across all sectors, including businesses, households, transport, and government, to support the country’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act.

PE2 said that if the Philippines invests about P12 trillion in energy efficiency by 2040, it could significantly cut energy use, lower energy costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and delay the need for new power infrastructure. The group added that the energy efficiency industry could also boost economic growth and create millions of green jobs over the next 15 years.

CCC vice chairman and executive director Robert Borje said energy efficiency is often overlooked but is essential to reducing carbon emissions. He noted that the country cannot rely on renewable energy alone and must also strengthen energy efficiency as a major pillar of climate action.

PE2 and the CCC discussed possible joint activities, including integrating energy efficiency into climate programs, supporting global energy efficiency efforts, and exploring climate funding to strengthen the energy services sector. Both sides agreed to hold follow-up talks on a possible partnership agreement.
