Meralco warns public vs power cable theft

Meralco on Monday renewed its warning to the public about the dangers of stealing power cables after an incident in Quezon City early Sunday disrupted electricity to nearly 8,000 customers.

At around 3:00 a.m. on January 4, a 37-year-old man attempted to steal power cables, causing a temporary power outage. Meralco crews restored electricity by 7:00 a.m.

The suspect was injured during the incident and was taken to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Meralco said the incident highlights the serious risks of tampering with electrical facilities, noting that contact with live power lines can cause severe injury or death. The company also reminded the public that cable and wire theft is illegal under the Anti-Electricity Pilferage Act, which carries penalties including fines and imprisonment.

Meralco urged the public to report suspicious activities involving its facilities to help ensure safe and reliable electricity service. Reports can be made through the MyMeralco app, official social media accounts, text hotlines, or the Meralco customer hotline at 16211.
