A member of the House of Representatives recently met with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director general Rafael Mariano Grossi to discuss the potential role of nuclear energy in addressing the country’s ongoing power challenges.
The meeting aimed to help lawmakers better understand how nuclear energy could strengthen national energy security at a time when the country faces high electricity costs and supply concerns. By engaging directly with the head of the IAEA, legislators sought expert guidance as they consider policies that could make nuclear power part of the country’s long-term energy mix.
Supporters argue that adopting nuclear energy could lower electricity prices for consumers and support economic growth by providing a stable and reliable power source. Mark O. Cojuangco, Representative of the 2nd District of Pangasinan and chair of the House Special Committee on Nuclear Energy, said the discussion could help move nuclear power higher on the national energy agenda, benefiting Filipinos who struggle with expensive electricity.
The visit comes shortly after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the government’s commitment to nuclear energy development and regulation, following the signing of the Philippine Nuclear Law. The timing underscores growing policy momentum toward exploring nuclear power as part of the country’s broader energy strategy.
