Igloo, Angkas partner to insure riders

Leading insurtech Igloo has partnered with Angkas, the Philippines’ largest motorcycle ride-hailing platform, to provide personal accident and medical insurance for riders and passengers, a move aimed at meeting emerging regulatory standards and bolstering safety in the country’s fast-growing mobility sector.

Motorcycle taxis have become an essential part of urban transport in the Philippines, where public transit infrastructure remains limited.

The sector is projected to generate up to USD1 billion in revenue by 2030. Despite rapid growth, many riders remain financially vulnerable to accidents and unforeseen medical costs.

The Philippine Insurance Commission recently issued a draft circular proposing mandatory Passenger Personal Accident Insurance coverage for motorcycle taxi operations, highlighting the government’s increasing focus on rider and passenger safety.

Under the partnership, Angkas’ more than 20,000 riders are automatically enrolled in personal accident insurance while completing trips. Coverage extends to passengers and includes benefits of up to P650,000 for personal accidents and P200,000 for medical expenses, as well as free access to private ambulance services.

Riders pay a minimum premium of P0.52 per trip.

“This partnership helps close a critical protection gap by embedding insurance directly into the platform where riders earn their livelihood,” said Raunak Mehta, co-founder and CEO of Igloo.

Angkas founder Angeline Tham added, “Our riders’ safety has always been our priority. Partnering with Igloo allows us to provide meaningful protection while aligning with regulatory expectations.”

Analysts say the collaboration sets a precedent for integrating insurance with mobility platforms, signaling a shift toward more resilient, compliant, and passenger-conscious transportation services in the Philippines.
