BCDA hits pause on John Hay Golf

The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) has extended the interim operations and maintenance (O&M) contract for John Hay Golf by another year, postponing the bidding for a long-term operator as it reassesses the course’s future management model.

Under the approved extension, Golfplus Management, Inc. (GMI) and Duck Sports and Music Productions, Inc. will continue running the Camp John Hay facility through 2026.

The move ensures uninterrupted operations following the golf course’s transition into a public-access venue, while giving BCDA breathing room to determine a more sustainable long-term framework.

The interim consortium was originally engaged not only to manage day-to-day operations but also to evaluate the overall condition of the course ahead of competitive bidding.

One of its key recommendations was the rehabilitation of the irrigation system—an upgrade considered essential to preserving course quality, especially amid rising maintenance costs and climate-related pressures.

BCDA said bidding for a long-term O&M partner will proceed only after it completes its review of the proposed upgrades and finalizes the most appropriate operating structure.

The delay signals a more cautious approach, reflecting lessons learned from past transitions of legacy leisure assets into commercially viable yet publicly accessible facilities.

GMI brings experience from managing large-scale golf estates such as Nuvali and Alviera, while Duck Sports contributes expertise in sports management, events, and marketing.

During the extended term, the interim managers will organize the BCDA Chairman’s Cup in 2026, sustain major tournaments, and continue rolling out incremental facility and amenity improvements.

John Hay Golf will remain open to the public, offering multiple playing and access options subject to standard green fees. Beyond commercial activity, the facility continues to support grassroots development, providing free access to golfers aged 18 and below through partnerships with the Philippine Sports Commission and the National Golf Association of the Philippines—reinforcing its dual role as both a community asset and a national sports incubator.
