Big power groups jostle for Meralco’s 200MW RE

Major power generation groups are emerging as key contenders in Manila Electric Co.’s (Meralco) Competitive Selection Process (CSP) for its 200-megawatt renewable energy (RE) baseload supply, highlighting how established energy players are positioning themselves for long-term clean power contracts.

Among the 15 bidders that participated in the January 15 pre-bid conference are some of the country’s largest power groups. The Ayala-led ACEN Corp. brings a diversified renewable portfolio spanning solar, wind, and geothermal. Lopez Group units—Energy Development Corp. and First Gen Hydro Power Corp.—are leveraging their dominance in geothermal and hydro, both considered critical sources of firm renewable baseload.

The Aboitiz Power Group is represented by Therma Luzon Inc. and Therma Visayas Inc., signaling continued expansion into renewables alongside its conventional fleet. San Miguel Global Power units GNPower Kauswagan Ltd. Co. and GNPower Mariveles Energy Center Ltd. Co. are also in the mix, reflecting how large thermal operators are adapting assets and strategies to meet renewable requirements.

Other notable participants include AP Renewable Energy Corp. (Aboitiz–EDC joint venture), Bac-Man Geothermal Inc., Green Core Geothermal Inc. (part of the Lopez Group), and Mariveles Power Generation Corp., alongside a cluster of solar developers such as Negros Island Solar Power Inc., SanMar Solar Inc., and Sinocalan Solar Power Corp.

The CSP will result in a Power Supply Agreement covering Meralco’s 200-MW baseload requirement beginning January 26, 2026, in line with the Renewable Portfolio Standards, subject to Energy Regulatory Commission approval. Bid submissions are due on February 16.

The strong showing of major power groups underscores how Meralco’s contracts remain among the most sought-after in the sector, offering scale, long-term revenue certainty, and strategic relevance as the Philippines pushes for a cleaner yet reliable power mix.
