Stronger connectivity seen as vital for work, learning in remote areas

Connecting communities across the Philippines’ more than 7,000 islands remains a major challenge, but it is critical to national development. Faster, more reliable, and affordable internet is essential to support hybrid work, online learning, and access to e-government and e-health services, especially in remote and geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs).

To address this, PLDT Inc. and its wireless unit Smart Communications continue to invest heavily in network infrastructure and new technologies while strengthening partnerships with government and industry groups. The goal is to expand internet access to far-flung communities where connectivity remains limited.

PLDT and Smart are testing innovative solutions to overcome geographic barriers. These include wireless broadband technologies that deliver fiber-like speeds without laying cables, laser-based communications that use light beams instead of physical lines, and satellite-powered mobile connectivity that allows basic communication even without traditional cell service.

Equally important is collaboration. PLDT and Smart are working closely with national agencies, local governments, and industry partners to simplify permits, remove delays, and speed up network deployment. These efforts aim to ensure that internet services reach areas that need them most.

The companies are also supporting government programs focused on education and inclusion. These include expanding connectivity to state universities and colleges nationwide and providing free SIM cards with mobile data to students and schools in remote areas through government-led initiatives.

By improving digital access in disadvantaged communities, PLDT and Smart are helping more Filipinos work, learn, and stay connected. These efforts underscore the importance of strong public-private cooperation in narrowing the digital divide and supporting inclusive growth across the country.
