Pact signed keeping Metro Manila connected during major disasters

Globe Telecom Inc. and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) have signed an agreement to make sure communication services stay up and running in Metro Manila even during large-scale disasters, including a worst-case earthquake.

The agreement was turned over on Friday in Pasig City and supports the MMDA’s Oplan Metro Yakal Plus, its disaster response plan for a major earthquake scenario. The partnership aims to ensure that authorities and communities can still communicate and respond quickly when disasters strike.

Under the agreement, Globe will activate its Disaster Recovery Plan by strengthening network sites, restoring services, and deploying mobile facilities such as Network in a Box and Cell on Wheels units in critical areas. These will help provide emergency connectivity when regular infrastructure is damaged.

The MMDA, in turn, will help Globe roll out these emergency services faster by giving access to priority locations, issuing credentials to Globe personnel, and providing secure areas with power and fuel for equipment.

Both Globe and the MMDA said the partnership highlights the importance of public-private cooperation in disaster preparedness, stressing that reliable connectivity is crucial for saving lives, coordinating response efforts, and keeping communities informed during emergencies.
