Danao commissary set benchmark for renewable-powered food manufacturing

The Jollibee Group is highlighting its Danao Commissary in Cebu as a showcase of how sustainability can be built into manufacturing and logistics from the very beginning, rather than added as an afterthought. The facility reflects the company’s policy direction under its Joy for Tomorrow global sustainability agenda, which aims to make environmental responsibility a standard part of business operations.

Designed with sustainability at its core, the Danao Commissary runs on 99 percent renewable energy, mainly from geothermal power supported by rooftop solar panels. This approach sharply reduces the facility’s carbon footprint while ensuring stable, long-term energy use. Water stewardship is also a key focus, with systems in place to collect rainwater and treat all wastewater on site before it is released, meeting environmental standards.

The commissary integrates 31 sustainability initiatives drawn from best practices across the Jollibee Group’s manufacturing and logistics network. These measures reflect a broader policy philosophy of using scale and operational expertise to drive practical, measurable environmental improvements.

Beyond its environmental features, the facility is designed to deliver benefits to the surrounding community. It has already created close to 500 jobs, with more than 60 percent of employees coming from Danao, and is expected to support up to 800 jobs when fully operational. Safety was built into the facility’s design, ensuring employees are protected while gaining exposure to modern manufacturing and logistics systems.

The impact is reinforced by the Jollibee Group Foundation, which continues to run community programs in Cebu and nearby areas focused on nutrition, education, and employability, aligning social development efforts with the company’s sustainability goals.
