SM Group trains first  on GeoRiskPH

SM Investments Corporation has become the first Philippine conglomerate to complete enterprise-wide training on GeoRiskPH, a suite of science-based digital tools designed to pinpoint location-specific vulnerabilities and strengthen resilience against disasters and climate change.

The parent of the SM Group said the milestone was achieved through a partnership with the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS). Nearly 60 executives and representatives joined the two-day, hands-on program, spanning teams from SM Prime Holdings, SM Retail, SM Markets, BDO Unibank, China Banking Corp., 2GO Group, and Philippine Geothermal Production Co.

The training walked participants through the GeoRiskPH platform, building a shared understanding of how accessible, science-backed tools can help safeguard communities, employees, and stakeholders from seismic, volcanic, hydro-meteorological hazards, and climate risks.

GeoRiskPH allows users to identify at-risk areas and assess hazard exposure affecting populations and critical infrastructure.

“As a group, we welcome this partnership as an important step in harnessing science-based tools to deepen our understanding of disaster and climate risks,” said Koleen Davila Palaganas, head of the SM Group Sustainability Office. “Given our nationwide presence, effective use of GeoRiskPH can contribute to employee and community safety, as well as faster, more informed disaster response.”

GeoRiskPH serves as a free, centralized source of environmental hazard and risk data, supported by applications such as HazardHunterPH, GeoMapperPH, GeoAnalyticsPH, and PlanSmart.

“This initiative equips stakeholders—from local governments to the private sector—to better protect lives and livelihoods,” said DOST-PHIVOLCS Director Teresito C. Bacolcol.

The partnership forms part of the SM Group’s broader climate risk assessment efforts and ongoing collaboration with DOST. It underscores growing private-sector demand for data-driven planning as climate impacts intensify nationwide across the Philippines.
