Wilmar Philippines switches to geothermal power in major decarbonization move

Wilmar Edible Oils Philippines Inc. has taken a major step toward cutting its carbon emissions by shifting to geothermal energy for its operations, marking a key milestone in its decarbonization efforts. The company partnered with First Gen Corporation, the country’s leading renewable energy provider, to supply clean and reliable power to its manufacturing facility.

Under an agreement signed on Jan. 21, 2026, First Gen will supply geothermal energy from its Mt. Apo plant in Cotabato to run Wilmar’s 24/7 processing plant in Gingoog, Misamis Oriental. The facility handles copra crushing, processing, and the refining of edible oils. Wilmar said energy use is one of its biggest sources of emissions, and moving to renewable energy is a practical way to lower its environmental impact while keeping power supply stable and costs predictable.

First Gen said geothermal energy is well suited for industrial use because it can provide continuous, round-the-clock power while reducing carbon emissions. The company currently operates more than 1,700 megawatts of renewable energy capacity from geothermal, wind, solar, and hydro plants nationwide, and also has interests in gas-fired plants to help ensure energy security. Over the next five years, First Gen plans to expand its renewable and low-carbon portfolio to reach 13 gigawatts, supporting more companies like Wilmar in their transition to cleaner energy.
