The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is investigating a trash landslide at a sanitary landfill in Barangay San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal.
In a statement Sunday, the DENR said its Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) conducted an on-site inspection after the incident last Friday at the Green Leap Solid Waste Management Inc. / Rizal Provincial Sanitary Landfill.
The agency has ordered immediate stabilization work in the affected area. This includes leveling and reshaping the eroded portion of the dumpsite to prevent further ground movement.
Personnel from the EMB’s Calabarzon regional office were sent to assess the damage and verify reports of possible missing individuals. Authorities have not yet confirmed any missing persons.
The landfill operator was directed to carry out corrective measures, including compacting waste, applying daily soil cover, limiting heavy equipment movement, restricting access to high-risk areas, and maintaining regular site inspections.
The EMB also required the company to submit a detailed action plan and daily progress reports on retrieval and rehabilitation efforts to ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards.
A technical conference will be held between EMB Calabarzon and the landfill operator to discuss the incident and review compliance with its Environmental Compliance Certificate. The agency may issue a notice of violation if non-compliance is found.
The DENR said it will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate with its regional office as the investigation continues.
