BFAR pushes strict enforcement to save fisheries sector

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has called for stricter and more consistent enforcement of fishing regulations to protect the country’s fisheries and ensure long-term sustainability of the industry.

BFAR national director Elizer Salilig thanked fishing operators in the Zamboanga Peninsula for complying with the annual three-month sardine fishing ban, saying the measure is vital to allow fish stocks to recover and secure future harvests. The ban, which covers key fishing grounds such as the East Sulu Sea, Basilan Strait, and Sibuguey Bay, was lifted on February 16.

Salilig stressed that consistent regulation, strict enforcement of existing fisheries laws, and close coordination among stakeholders are essential to support the national sustainable fishing policy and ensure steady growth in the sector.

BFAR also secured support from several government agencies and partner institutions, including local officials in Zamboanga, the Philippine Coast Guard, the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority, the Agriculture and Fisheries Committee, the Bangsamoro Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform, and the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology.
