DOE deepens nuclear partnership with Saskatchewan to power PH clean energy shift

The Department of Energy (DOE) has reinforced its nuclear energy partnership with the Canadian province of Saskatchewan following a joint working group meeting aimed at fast-tracking clean energy cooperation.

The meeting advanced the June 2025 memorandum of understanding between the Philippines and Saskatchewan, focusing on small modular reactors (SMRs), workforce development, research collaboration, and the repurposing of aging coal plants.

The session was led by Saskatchewan Advanced Education Minister Ken Cheveldayoff and co-chaired by Philippine Energy Undersecretary Mario Marasigan, with participation from Philippine and Canadian academic institutions.

Key outcomes include the creation of a joint task force to develop localized Nuclear Engineering and Safety Management curricula, along with train-the-trainer programs and potential technical-vocational cooperation with Saskatchewan Polytechnic. Both sides will also coordinate on micro-credentialing and skilled worker training for nuclear and clean energy sectors.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said the partnership strengthens the country’s institutional and workforce readiness for its planned nuclear program.

The DOE is targeting at least 1,200 megawatts of nuclear capacity by 2032 under the Philippine Energy Plan 2023–2050, supported by a newly streamlined licensing framework for nuclear power projects.
