Middle East turmoil jolts Philippine export outlook

Rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are sending fresh shockwaves through global trade, and the Philippines is squarely in the blast radius.

The Philippine Exporters Confederation, Inc. (PHILEXPORT) has sounded the alarm over escalating hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, warning that prolonged conflict could stall Philippine export growth just as global demand shows signs of fragility.

At the heart of the concern: oil.
Crude prices have spiked on fears of supply disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow corridor that carries roughly a fifth of the world’s oil shipments.

For the Philippines—a net oil importer—higher fuel costs translate quickly into steeper production, transport, and logistics expenses. Exporters, already navigating tight margins, risk losing price competitiveness in key markets.

    The disruption is not theoretical.

Airspace closures and rerouted cargo lanes are pushing up freight rates and insurance premiums while stretching delivery times. Electronics, garments, processed food, and furniture exporters could feel the squeeze first, as supply chains grow more complex and expensive.

Currency swings and rising inflation abroad add another layer of uncertainty, threatening consumer demand across Asia and Europe. Meanwhile, the Middle East itself — a vital market for Philippine food products, construction materials, and services — faces fragile logistics links amid flight suspensions in the Gulf.

PHILEXPORT is urging swift action: secure fuel supply, ease port bottlenecks, expand trade financing, and accelerate market diversification. Exporters, for their part, are being advised to stress-test supply chains and hedge against cost volatility.

In a global economy already on edge, the message is clear: diplomacy abroad and resilience at home are now critical to keeping Philippine exports on course.
