Smart and Lynk Global complete sarellite-to-phone tests in Ilocos Norte

Smart Communications, Inc. and its partner Lynk Global have successfully completed new field tests of their Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite service in the province’s coastal towns of Burgos, Bangui, and Pagudpud.

The tests were conducted in areas facing the West Philippine Sea where mobile signal from traditional cell towers is often weak or unavailable. The latest trials expand earlier demonstrations held in Catanduanes and highlight the technology’s potential to bring connectivity to remote and Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs).

PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Network Head Menardo G. Jimenez said the initiative aims to connect communities that are difficult to reach due to the country’s archipelagic geography. He noted that building traditional cell towers in far-flung areas can be challenging, making satellite-to-phone technology a practical solution.

According to Smart, D2D satellite service is designed to complement its existing mobile network. The service could be especially useful during natural disasters, when cell towers and other ground infrastructure may be damaged.

Lynk Global CEO Ramu Potarazu said the Philippines’ geography makes it an ideal location to demonstrate the real-world value of satellite direct-to-device technology. He added that the partnership with Smart is among the most advanced in the region and could position the country as one of the first markets to roll out satellite-to-phone connectivity for public use.

Smart and Lynk plan to expand testing to more regions, including coastal areas and maritime routes, while coordinating with regulators, industry partners, and local government units in preparation for possible commercial deployment.

The initiative forms part of the PLDT Group’s broader goal of delivering more inclusive, resilient, and future-ready digital connectivity nationwide
