First Gen Corporation marked the 50th anniversary of its subsidiary, Energy Development Corporation (EDC), highlighting its role in advancing geothermal energy in the Philippines.
Established on March 5, 1976 through a presidential decree, EDC was tasked with developing geothermal power to reduce the country’s reliance on imported oil. The Philippines became a global leader in geothermal energy by the mid-1980s. EDC was privatized in 2007 and later became part of First Gen.
First Gen chairman Federico Lopez said EDC has been key to the company’s position as a clean energy leader. Geothermal energy remains the country’s only renewable source capable of providing baseload power.
During the milestone, First Gen also launched a unified corporate brand to align its power generation, supply, and energy solutions businesses. The restructuring places the company’s renewable assets under First Gen Renewables, while supply services and energy solutions will operate under First Gen Energy Supply and First Gen Energy Solutions.
First Gen president Giles Puno said the new branding aims to strengthen coordination across the group and better respond to customers’ evolving energy needs.
