New Davao cold chain hub aims cutting food losses

A newly-opened cold storage facility in Davao City aims to cut post-harvest losses and strengthen the Philippines’ food supply chain, its developers said, as the country pushes to modernize agricultural logistics.

AC Logistics and Glacier Megafridge Inc. recently launched the GMAC Davao cold storage facility, expanding temperature-controlled infrastructure in Mindanao to support farmers, food producers and logistics providers.

Erry Hardianto, president and chief executive officer of AC Logistics, said the project addresses long-standing supply chain gaps that contribute to heavy food losses between farm and market.

“Post-harvest loss continues to be a pressing supply chain challenge in the Philippines,” Hardianto said. “The opening of GMAC Davao represents our shared commitment to strengthening food security.”

He said the facility combines modern cold storage technology with integrated logistics services designed to minimize spoilage and preserve the value of agricultural products.

Cold chain systems are critical for maintaining the quality of perishable goods such as fruits, vegetables, seafood and meat. In many agricultural areas, however, limited storage and transport infrastructure often leads to products deteriorating before reaching consumers.

Arturo Yan, chief executive officer of Glacier Megafridge, said the project forms part of a broader push to expand modern logistics infrastructure outside major urban centers.
“Glacier has always believed that world-class cold chain facilities should be accessible across the country and not just in major metropolitan areas,” Yan said.

He added that the partnership with AC Logistics reflects a shared goal of building a nationwide cold chain network capable of supporting inclusive economic growth.

The GMAC Davao facility is expected to improve storage capacity and distribution efficiency for Mindanao’s agricultural and food industries, while helping farmers and producers bring fresher goods to domestic and export markets.
