Globe, GCash bring free Wi-Fi and cashless payments to Lucena Public Market

Globe Telecom and GCash have launched a pilot program providing free public Wi-Fi at Lucena Public Market to support cashless transactions among vendors and shoppers.

The initiative, supported by the Lucena City Government, uses Globe AT HOME’s GFiber Prepaid service to deliver fast and stable internet access inside the market. The improved connectivity allows vendors and their regular customers, or suki, to complete GCash payments more smoothly.

According to Globe, the program aims to address connectivity issues that often interrupt digital payments in public markets. With reliable internet access, vendors and shoppers can also use other GCash services such as sending money, buying mobile load, paying bills, and accessing financial tools like credit and insurance.

Globe AT HOME Vice President Abigail Cardino said the initiative helps modernize everyday transactions in traditional markets while giving vendors access to digital services without monthly internet bills or lock-in contracts.

GCash public sector head Cleo Celeste Santos said digitalizing public markets can help small vendors build a digital financial record, which may open access to services such as credit and insurance.

Market vendors say the free Wi-Fi has made transactions easier. One vendor said the strong signal allows them to use GCash without buying mobile data or leaving the market to find a signal.

Globe said the Lucena pilot is part of its broader effort to treat internet connectivity as a basic utility and expand financial inclusion by bringing stable digital access to community hubs such as public markets.
