NorthPort said its three-year terminal upgrade program is progressing well and is expected to be completed by 2027.
NorthPort serves as the main hub for domestic trade at the Port of Manila, connecting the capital to other islands through passenger transport, inter-island shipping, and container handling.
The company reported that structural works on the second and third 42.5-meter sections of Pier 14 have already been completed ahead of schedule. These improvements strengthen the Terminal 1 wharf and increase the pier’s ability to withstand earthquakes. As of February, work has moved to the fourth and final 52.5-meter section of the pier.
Ongoing upgrades include resurfacing the remaining deck, repairing above-deck damage, and replacing the fender system with larger 1,000-millimeter cell fenders to allow safer vessel docking. The works are being done simultaneously to avoid disrupting port operations.
NorthPort is operated by International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), which said the modernization will help the terminal support long-term growth in domestic trade while maintaining safe and efficient operations.
ICTSI is a global port operator that manages 34 terminals in 20 countries across Asia-Pacific, the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and applies environmental, social, and governance standards across its facilities.
