SM Prime expands Mindanao retail footprint

SM Prime Holdings Inc., the property development arm of the Sy Group, is continuing its expansion in Mindanao, opening SM City Zamboanga on March 20 as its 90th mall nationwide and eighth in the country’s southern region.

The four-level complex adds over 42,000 square meters of gross leasable space to Zamboanga City, signaling continued confidence in the city’s economic momentum. The project builds on the success of SM City Mindpro, which opened in 2020 and helped reshape the local retail landscape.

“Zamboanga is a strong and growing market,” said SM Prime president Jeffrey C. Lim, pointing to rising business activity and consumer demand. The expansion is also expected to generate jobs, boost tourism, and support local enterprises.

SM City Zamboanga aims to stand out with several firsts. These include Mindanao’s tallest scenic elevator with LED displays and a corner outdoor LED wall capable of 3D content—features designed to elevate the mall experience and attract foot traffic.

Sustainability is also in focus. The mall will host the city’s first electric vehicle charging station, alongside solar panels, a Trash to Cash recycling program, and an e-waste collection facility—aligning with SM Prime’s broader environmental push.

Anchored by tenants such as The SM Store, Adidas, Fully Booked, and JCO, the mall blends retail with lifestyle. It will also feature a Muslim Prayer Room, underscoring inclusivity in a diverse market.

Lifestyle attractions include an indoor garden and Skyplaza, upgraded Cyberzone, modern cinemas, and a Paw Park, positioning the mall as more than just a shopping destination.

Strategically located near Zamboanga International Airport and the seaport, SM City Zamboanga is poised to become a central commercial hub—further cementing SM Prime’s dominance in regional retail expansion.
