The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that all passengers of MRT-3 and LRT-2 will get a 50 percent fare discount starting Monday, March 23, 2026.
The discount was ordered by Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to help commuters cope with rising costs. These higher expenses are mainly due to increasing global oil prices linked to tensions in the Middle East.
The President said the government aims to make daily travel easier and more affordable for Filipinos.
Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the discount will help passengers save money, especially compared to driving and paying for expensive fuel.
The 50 percent discount applies to all passengers. Senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and students will continue to receive the same discount using their white beep cards. Regular passengers can use blue beep cards or buy single-journey tickets, both with the discounted fare.
The DOTr is also discussing with LRT-1 management the possibility of extending the same fare discount to that line, which is operated by a private company.
