The Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) said it will continue providing fuel assistance to fisherfolk nationwide as global oil prices rise.
The agency is currently using the remaining funds from last year to avoid delays in aid distribution while waiting for a supplemental agreement with the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP). The agreement is expected to release an additional ₱50 million, which will benefit around 15,000 more small-scale fishers, especially in poorer municipalities.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the government is acting quickly to protect fisherfolk from the effects of high fuel costs, stressing that their livelihood is vital to maintaining the country’s food supply.
So far, more than 10,000 fisherfolk have received assistance. The highest number of beneficiaries are in Regions VII and V. Distribution is ongoing from March 16 to 26, with several other regions also covered.
Under the program, each qualified fisher receives a one-time ₱3,000 subsidy. Aid is given through cash cards or vouchers, depending on access to fuel stations.
DA-BFAR said it is working to speed up the release of additional funds and ensure continued support for the fisheries sector as fuel prices remain high.
