Japan is aiming to deepen its strategic partnership with the Philippines, exploring new opportunities in technology, economic security, and high-growth sectors, Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya said.
Speaking at the Forum on Strengthening Strategic Ties: 70 Years of Japan–Philippines Diplomatic Relations organized by Stratbase Institute on March 24, Endo highlighted promising areas for cooperation, including space exploration, green transformation, digital innovation, and artificial intelligence.
“Economic security and resilience will remain important areas for cooperation,” he added, noting that both countries share a forward-looking agenda grounded in innovation and stability.
For decades, Japan has been the Philippines’ largest bilateral development partner, supporting initiatives ranging from major infrastructure projects—railways, roads, and bridges—to disaster risk reduction, maritime cooperation, and grassroots development programs.
Japanese companies are also key players in the Philippine economy, with around 1,600 firms operating across sectors, reinforcing Japan’s status as one of Manila’s top trade and investment partners.
Beyond economic ties, people-to-people connections remain a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship. Thousands of Filipinos contribute to Japanese society, particularly in healthcare and maritime industries, while remittances from Japan are among the Philippines’ largest sources of foreign income. Endo recalled Filipino caregivers’ dedication in Japan’s Tohoku region after the 2011 earthquake as a symbol of resilience and solidarity.
Cultural and educational exchanges are expanding as well, through programs such as the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme and a growing interest in Japanese language studies among Filipino students.
“As genuine partners,” Endo said, “Japan and the Philippines will continue working together to safeguard peace, promote prosperity, and realize a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
With technology, security, and sustainable development as shared priorities, both countries are positioned to strengthen an already enduring and multifaceted partnership.
