Smart, EdgePoint to roll out solar-powered towers in PH

Smart Communications, Inc. has partnered with EdgePoint Towers Inc. to deploy solar-powered telecom towers across the country, starting with 20 sites in off-grid and underserved areas.

The initiative aims to improve network reliability and expand connectivity in communities with limited or unstable electricity supply. By using solar energy instead of diesel, the companies expect to keep services running even during power outages and severe weather.

PLDT chief operating officer and network head Menardo Jimenez Jr. said the move will help reduce exposure to rising global oil prices and lessen dependence on fossil fuels.

The solar-powered towers will also cut costs by reducing the need to transport fuel to remote locations.

Smart said the project supports the PLDT Group’s goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030, based on 2019 levels.

The installed solar systems have a combined capacity of over 181 kilowatt-peak, with battery storage exceeding 20,000 ampere-hours. This is expected to reduce diesel use by about 198,000 liters per year and avoid around 545 tons of carbon emissions annually.

Company officials said the partnership will help build a more reliable, energy-efficient, and environmentally sustainable telecom network, while improving connectivity in remote parts of the Philippines.

EdgePoint said it will continue working with Smart to deliver energy-efficient infrastructure and support growing demand for connectivity in underserved communities.
