Unilever, General Trias roll out livelihood push

Unilever Philippines has deepened its engagement with General Trias through “GentriAsenso,” a community-based livelihood and skills program aimed at widening income opportunities for residents.

The initiative builds on the company’s expanding industrial footprint in the city, where its manufacturing facility—opened in 2023—now produces roughly 90 percent of products sold locally, while supplying export markets across Southeast Asia, Australia, and North America.

The scale of these operations underscores General Trias’ growing role in Unilever’s regional supply chain, while also raising expectations for more inclusive local economic spillovers.

Formalized through a memorandum of agreement with the city government and the General Trias City Social Welfare Development Office, the program drew 121 initial participants, 107 of them women—an early indicator of strong demand for accessible, community-level livelihood interventions.

Structured around three pillars—Kaalaman (education), Kasanayan (skills), and Kabuhayan (livelihood)—GenTriAsenso will be delivered via monthly barangay caravans to lower barriers to participation.

Each cycle will train 75 residents, with a target of 450 beneficiaries. Participants will receive hands-on instruction in hair care, beauty services, and cookery, alongside starter kits, financial literacy training, and post-program coaching.

Company and local officials framed the effort as a model of public-private collaboration.

GenTriAsenso, for Unilever, extends corporate sustainability commitments beyond manufacturing. Meantime, it offers General Trias a pathway to broaden grassroots economic participation—particularly among women—through skills development tied to practical, income-generating opportunities.
