First Gen Corporation celebrated the 50th anniversary of its subsidiary, Energy Development Corporation (EDC), highlighting a major milestone in the country’s renewable energy sector.
The anniversary also marks five decades of geothermal energy development in the Philippines, which remains the only renewable energy source capable of providing continuous, or baseload, power.
First Gen chairman Federico Lopez said EDC was created to harness local energy resources and strengthen the country’s energy security. EDC was established as a government-owned firm in 1976 to reduce reliance on imported oil. By the 1980s, the Philippines had become a global leader in geothermal energy.
EDC was privatized in 2007 and became part of First Gen.
To mark the milestone, First Gen also launched a unified corporate brand aimed at strengthening its position in renewable energy. The new structure brings together its power generation, supply, and energy solutions under one group.
Under the rebranding:
“First Gen Renewables” will manage 28 solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal plants
“First Gen Energy Supply” will handle electricity distribution and market sales
“First Gen Energy Solutions” will focus on on-site systems and energy efficiency tools
First Gen president Giles Puno said the move will help the company better meet customer demands for reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy.
The new branding is now being rolled out to employees, partners, and customers.
