GSIS launches solar loan program for government workers

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) began accepting applications on March 25 for its Ginhawa Solar Energy Loan (GSEL), aimed at helping government employees install solar power systems at home.

The program supports the push of Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who recently issued Executive Order No. 110 declaring a national energy emergency due to rising electricity costs and energy security concerns.

GSIS said the loan allows members to borrow up to ₱500,000 to cover the cost of solar panels and installation. Loans can be paid over five years with a 5 percent annual interest rate and no service fee.

Applications must be submitted through the GSIS Touch mobile app. Approved loans will be released within three working days and will be automatically deducted from the borrower’s salary.

Eligible applicants include active GSIS members with at least three years of government service. Required documents include a quotation or proof of purchase from a solar provider.

The program also offers free three-year insurance for solar installations against risks such as fire, typhoon, and earthquakes, as well as loan insurance that covers unpaid balances in case of the borrower’s death.

GSIS said the initiative will help make solar energy more affordable by spreading costs over time and allowing users to save on electricity bills. Households may also earn from excess power through the government’s net metering system.

The solar loan program will run for an initial three years.
