SM Prime expands transit links to ease commuting

SM Prime Holdings Inc., the property development arm of the Sy Group, is increasing investment in transport-linked infrastructure, partnering with government agencies to improve mobility across Metro Manila by leveraging the strategic locations of its malls.

“Urban mobility is central to national development. By working with government, we are able to improve access points that affect commuters every day,” said President Jeffrey C. Lim. He noted that the collaboration gained traction during the pandemic, when improving access to public transport became a priority.

Among its latest projects, SM Prime is investing over P300 million to build a direct pedestrian link between the LRT Line 2 Antipolo Station and SM City Masinag. The covered walkway will provide weather-protected access, cut transfer times, and eliminate the need for commuters to cross busy roads at street level.

The project will feature ramps, elevators, lighting, and closed-circuit television systems to enhance accessibility and safety. Construction is set to begin in the second quarter of 2026, with completion targeted within six months under a public-private partnership with the Light Rail Transit Authority.

The company has already rolled out similar initiatives. The SM North EDSA Busway Concourse, opened in March 2025, integrates covered walkways and direct access to the EDSA busway, improving passenger flow. A similar concourse is now under construction at SM Megamall, with partial completion expected by early 2026.

Beyond physical infrastructure, SM Prime is also tapping digital solutions. In partnership with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, the company is rolling out real-time traffic updates via mall directories, powered by the agency’s AI Traffic Management System.

The initiative highlights a growing role for private developers in addressing urban congestion, as integrated transport and commercial hubs become key to easing daily commutes in the capital.
