SM malls to shorten amid oil shock

SM Supermalls will open later on weekdays nationwide starting March 30, shifting mall hours to 11:00 a.m. from Monday to Friday as part of efforts to conserve electricity during the ongoing National Energy Emergency. On Saturdays and Sundays, the malls open 10 a.m. Closing hours on all days will be at 9 p.m.

The company said the adjustment aims to help ease pressure on the national grid by reducing demand during peak morning hours. “This strategic shift is a direct response to the urgent need for nationwide power conservation,” it said.

The revised schedule applies to all SM malls across the Philippines and is expected to contribute to lower electricity consumption at a critical time for the country’s energy supply.

SM said the move is part of broader efforts to manage resources efficiently while maintaining service quality for shoppers and tenants.

“We are proactively adapting to the current situation by adjusting our operating hours,” said Steven Tan. “We remain committed to delivering elevated retail experiences for all Filipinos, supported by our increased use of renewable energy.”

The mall operator added it is continuing to expand its use of renewable energy and explore other sustainable solutions to strengthen operational resilience while supporting national conservation goals.
