Mega Prime, CPF build bigger basket for more eggs

Mega Prime Foods Inc., known for Mega Sardines, is stepping decisively beyond seafood, partnering with Thailand-based Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) in a move that signals a broader pivot in the Philippines’ food production strategy.

The companies recently broke ground on the Mega CP Layer Complex in Zamboanga City, a 22-hectare facility positioned as one of Mindanao’s first large-scale, world-class egg production hubs. With an initial capacity of up to 100 million eggs annually, which is expandable to five times that, the project reflects the scale required to stabilize supply and keep protein affordable amid rising demand.

More than a capacity play, the venture illustrates a convergence of global systems and local execution. CPF will introduce its integrated layer complex model, combining automated farm operations, stringent biosecurity, and internationally benchmarked standards adapted to Philippine conditions.

This could set a new operational baseline for poultry producers, particularly as the industry grapples with efficiency gaps and disease risks.

Sustainability features prominently. Plans include odor control technologies and a biogas facility that converts waste into energy, potentially lowering costs while mitigating environmental impact—an increasingly critical balance for intensive agriculture.

The economic implications are equally notable. Beyond direct employment, the complex is expected to stimulate upstream and downstream supply chains, reinforcing Zamboanga’s role as an emerging agricultural hub in Mindanao.

For Mega Prime, the partnership marks a strategic evolution, from a seafood leader to a more diversified food producer. The bet on eggs, a staple protein, aligns with a longer-term push toward food security, signaling how private sector investments may help build a more resilient and scalable Philippine food system.
