TPB holds tourism crisis preparedness seminar in Albay

The Tourism Promotions Board Philippines (TPB) gathered tourism stakeholders in Albay for a hybrid seminar focused on crisis preparedness and risk management in the tourism sector.

The event, held near Mayon Volcano, drew 53 onsite participants and more than 350 virtual attendees. Discussions highlighted the dual nature of the country’s natural attractions—offering economic opportunities while posing risks from disasters.

TPB chief operating officer Maria Margarita Montemayor Nograles emphasized that disasters affect not only destinations but also communities that depend on tourism for their livelihood.

Experts underscored the importance of proactive planning. Eylla Laire Gutierrez presented global case studies, stressing early risk assessment and rapid response systems. Jericho Adolfo discussed tools for identifying hazards, noting tourism’s vulnerability due to its reliance on mobility and public perception.

Communications consultant Olive Joy Valera highlighted the role of clear and timely messaging in maintaining traveler confidence during crises.

The seminar concluded with a workshop on crisis communication planning. Participants also joined a post-event tour of local attractions, reinforcing the need to balance tourism promotion with safety and sustainability.

TPB said strengthening preparedness systems is key to protecting communities and sustaining confidence in Philippine destinations.
