Globe Telecom has partnered with a group of international firms to develop the Candle Cable System, a major undersea network aimed at improving internet connectivity across Southeast and East Asia.
The consortium includes Meta, SoftBank Corp., NEC Corporation, and other regional players.
The project involves building an 8,000-kilometer submarine cable linking Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Once completed in 2028, the system is expected to deliver up to 570 terabits per second, making it one of the highest-capacity networks in the region.
Globe will serve as both an investor and landing partner. The cable will connect to its station in Nasugbu, Batangas, complementing another landing point in Baler, Aurora. These dual sites aim to improve network reliability and reduce disruptions caused by natural disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes.
Company officials said the project will strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure, supporting faster and more reliable services for businesses, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence applications.
The new cable system is also expected to help the Philippines keep up with growing demand for digital services and align with the government’s push for stronger connectivity and digital transformation.
