Manila Water urges septic tank cleaning as summer begins

Manila Water is urging customers to schedule septic tank desludging at the start of the summer season to prevent health and sanitation problems.

The company said higher temperatures and increased water use during summer can put extra strain on septic systems, raising the risk of overflows, foul odors, and possible contamination of soil and water sources.

Manila Water official Jeric Sevilla explained that septic tanks naturally build up waste over time. Without regular cleaning, these can lead to costly damage and unhealthy conditions at home.

The company recommends desludging every five to seven years. Regular maintenance can also help reduce stagnant wastewater, which may become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and increase the risk of dengue.

For April, Manila Water will deploy desludging caravans across several areas in its East Zone, including parts of Marikina City, Quezon City, San Juan City, Antipolo City, Pateros, and nearby Rizal towns.

Additional services will be provided to selected households in City of Manila, Makati City, and other areas that have not undergone septic tank cleaning in the past five years.

Residents are advised to coordinate with their barangay or call the Manila Water hotline (1627) to check desludging schedules in their communities.
