Startup Nascent gains global battery recognition

A Philippine breakthrough in energy technology is drawing global attention, as Nascent Technologies Corp. secures a place in the Volta Foundation’s Annual Battery Report 2025, according to the Board of Investments (BOI).

Widely regarded as a leading reference in battery innovation, the report named Nascent among the “2025 Sodium-Ion Battery Players by Region,” making it the only Philippine-based firm listed alongside global heavyweights such as Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) and BYD Company Limited.

The company has also gained recognition from UNIGRID Battery, further strengthening its growing international profile.

Nascent’s inclusion highlights its role as a regional pioneer in sodium-ion (Na-ion) battery technology.

It is currently the only laboratory in Southeast Asia developing a full-cell Na-ion system, spanning raw materials, cell design, and downstream applications. The company is positioning sodium-ion as a safer, more affordable, and more sustainable alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries.

The BOI said Nascent is now expanding into motorcycle battery solutions and energy storage systems for residential and commercial use.

Trade Undersecretary and BOI Managing Head Ceferino Rodolfo said the firm’s global recognition reflects the Philippines’ increasing capacity to compete in next-generation energy technologies.

Commercial momentum is also building. As part of the Philippine delegation to The Battery Show Asia & Mobility Tech Asia 2025 in Hong Kong, Nascent reported generating more than USD1 million in potential business leads.

The company is set to begin pilot testing of its Na-ion battery packs this year, initially targeting the starting, lighting, and ignition (SLI) segment for internal combustion engine vehicles, as it moves closer to market deployment.
