Water firm rolls out summer plan amid extreme heat warnings

Manila Water Philippine Ventures (MWPV), the Non-East Zone unit of Manila Water Company, has started its summer preparedness plan as the country faces possible extreme heat in the coming months.

State weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration warned that heat index levels could reach 42°C to 51°C in parts of the Philippines this April, especially in urban areas. High temperatures usually lead to higher water use and lower water supply due to less rainfall.

To prepare, MWPV activated measures across its 13 operating units in provinces including Laguna, Pampanga, Aklan, Samar, Cebu, and Davao del Norte. The company said the plan focuses on early action to manage increased demand and avoid supply problems during the dry season.

Steps include using backup water sources like deep wells, checking and maintaining pumps and reservoirs, adjusting water pressure and flow, and speeding up leak repairs to reduce water loss.

MWPV said its approach uses past data, climate monitoring, and lessons from previous dry seasons and El Niño events to guide operations.

Company official Melvin John Tan said the year-round preparedness allows faster response to heat-related pressure on water systems, especially in densely populated areas.

The company added it will continue working with local governments and investing in climate-resilient infrastructure to help ensure stable water supply and support public health during extreme weather conditions.
