The Department of Energy (DOE) said all remaining ASEAN energy meetings for 2026 will be held virtually to save costs and use resources more efficiently.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said the shift follows the President’s directive to make the country’s hosting of ASEAN activities more cost-effective while keeping key goals on track.
Garin assured that the Philippines remains committed to leading a productive ASEAN energy chairmanship, adding that online meetings will still allow close coordination with other member states and partners.
The DOE said scheduled activities will continue, including sub-sector meetings in April and May, the Senior Officials Meeting on Energy in June, and the ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting in September.
The move comes after the Philippines hosted an in-person ASEAN energy meeting in Bohol in January 2026.
Despite going virtual, the DOE said it will continue pushing regional priorities such as energy security, system resilience, and stronger energy connectivity. Key topics include the ASEAN power grid, petroleum security agreements, and the Trans-ASEAN gas pipeline.
The agency added that it will maintain active engagement with all ASEAN members to ensure discussions remain focused and results-driven.
