The fuel surcharge in February eases further to Level 5 from Level 6 in January, making possible for the various airlines to sell even cheaper seats during the month.
In an advisory, the Civil Aeronautics Board said the lower surcharge levied against passenger and cargo in February was made possible by favorable jet fuel prices.
Under Level 5, the fuel surcharge on domestic flights range only from P151 to P542 depending on the distance. International flights may impose a surcharge ranging from P498 to P775.
“Airlines wishing to impose or collect a fuel surcharge must file its application with the CAB on or before the effectivity period, with fuel surcharge rates not exceeding the above-stated level,” the CAB said.
It noted the fuel surcharge is an optional fee allowing airlines to recover fuel cost and stem losses caused by upward spikes in fuel prices.
The fuel surcharge is not a part of the basic airfare and may be reduced or removed depending on the price of jet fuel in the market.
AirAsia Philippines spokesperson and first officer Steve Dailisan said the adjustment is a welcome development for airlines and their guests, especially for those already planning their early summer getaways.
“While aviation fuel prices remain volatile, the adjustment in fuel surcharge is very timely with many Philippine festivals happening within its period of implementation,” Dailisan said.
AirAsia is selling flights costing less than P100 one way in all its domestic destinations.
