MANITO, Albay – The Energy Development Corp. (EDC), rated one of the world’s largest geothermal power producers, projects completing three more geothermal power projects this year following the inauguration of the 28.9-megawatt Palayan binary geothermal power plant here on Friday.
The other geothermal power projects soon operational include the 20-MW Tanawon binary also located in Albay, the 28-MW Mahanagdong binary plant in Leyte and the 5.6-MW Bago binary in Negros Occidental.
Jerome Cainglet, EDC president and chief operating officer, said the company is also into battery energy storage systems (BESS), three of which are scheduled for completion this year.
EDC said the BESS project in Albay is rated at 20 MW, in Leyte 10 MW and in Negro another 10 MW.
Its P7 billion Palayan binary geothermal project harnesses the thermal energy of brine, a by-product of its 120-MW Palayan Bayan 1 flash geothermal power plant that generates electricity without the need for additional steam.
Palayan Binary employs a zero-discharge system that ensures the brine and other fluids are efficiently re-injected into the reservoir to minimize environmental impact. Its gross annual generation is rated at 253,000 megawatt hours (MWh) and net annual generation of 219,800 MWh helping reduce the country’s carbon emissions by an estimated 72,200 tons a year.
Construction of the PBGPP began in the last quarter of 2021 amid the uncertainties of the pandemic.
