Laguindingan Airport set for major upgrade

Laguindingan International Airport is set for a significant transformation following the recent signing of a concession agreement between the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Aboitiz InfraCapital (AIC) for a ₱12.75 billion rehabilitation and modernization project.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. emphasized the importance of this development, saying, “The signing of this concession agreement for the Laguindingan International Airport public-private partnership project provides us with the opportunity to expand facilities, upgrade the terminal, augment capacity, and deliver our services in a safer, efficient, and more convenient way.”

Transportation Secretary Jaime J. Bautista highlighted the broader implications of the project, noting that the airport’s upgrade is poised to stimulate regional development, create jobs, and attract investments. “Like other airport development projects, Laguindingan’s transformation should promote regional growth, generate jobs and livelihood, and create investment opportunities,” Bautista said.

The concession agreement, which entrusts Aboitiz InfraCapital with the airport’s operations and maintenance for over 30 years, is part of the government’s initiative to enhance airport infrastructure nationwide. Under the PPP scheme, AIC manages a two-phase capacity augmentation project, which includes reconfiguring existing terminal space and constructing a new passenger terminal building (PTB) to accommodate increasing passenger demand.

Since its opening in 2013, the Laguindingan International Airport has served as Northern Mindanao’s primary gateway, and this major upgrade is expected to significantly improve passenger comfort and overall travel experience.
