BOC Intelligence Group triples seizures, confiscates P81B illicit goods in 2024

The Intelligence Group at  the Bureau of Customs more than tripled the value of its seizures from 2022 to 2024. According to Verne Y. Enciso, director of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS), the group seized P81 billion worth of illicit goods this year, compared to P24 billion in 2022. The total number of seizures also surged from 729 in 2022 to 1,537 this year.

A significant portion of this success was attributed to operations at the Manila International Container Port (MICP), which accounted for over half or P55.3 billion of the confiscated goods. The seized contraband ranged from illegal drugs, vape products, and frozen mackerel, to luxury vehicles, motorcycle parts, used clothing, fake items, and agricultural products.

The BOC’s intelligence efforts have extended beyond cargo seizures, with authorities also confiscating at least three vessels, along with their cargo, including diesel shipments. The largest seizures have been stored in warehouses across Manila, Caloocan, Parañaque, and Bulacan.

Reflecting on the agency’s progress, Enciso said, “Two years later, here we are, with results that speak for themselves. Under the leadership of commissioner Bienvenido Rubio and deputy commissioner Juvymax Uy, the Intelligence Group has made remarkable strides in performance.”

The bureau’s enhanced operations were also highlighted in a recent presentation covering trends in seized commodities and the most common smuggling methods. The BOC’s increased focus on good governance and effective countermeasures against illicit trade has bolstered collaborative efforts, improved border security, and facilitated smoother trade operations.

In closing, commissioner Rubio encouraged his team to build on their success. “With these results, I urge you to continue pushing forward with dedication and excellence as we prepare for more years of success.”
