The Philippines’ national football team defied expectations in the first leg of the 2024 ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup, defeating defending champion Thailand 2-1 in front of a packed Rizal Memorial Football Stadium, ending a 52-year winless streak against the Southeast Asian football powerhouse. Sandro Reyes gave the Philippines an early lead in the 21st minute, but Thailand’s Suphaton Bureerat equalized just before halftime. With the game seemingly destined for a 1-1 draw, Enrique Linares struck in the 95th minute to secure the stunning victory. The second leg is set for Sunday, December 29, in Bangkok.
