AirAsia sees bookings surge ahead of lunar new year travel

AirAsia Philippines is experiencing a significant uptick in bookings, with 220,000 passengers expected to travel to popular festive destinations across Asia between January and February this year. Destinations such as Japan, Hong Kong, Incheon, Taiwan, and Kuala Lumpur — renowned for their vibrant Chinatowns — have seen a marked increase in demand, thanks to AirAsia’s affordable and accessible flight options.

“We’re excited to see such strong demand even beyond the holiday season. As Lunar New Year approaches, we’re proud to connect the Filipino-Chinese community with the heart of the celebrations across ASEAN and beyond,” said Steve Dailisan, communications and public affairs head at AirAsia Philippines.

To ensure a seamless travel experience, Dailisan urged travelers to arrive at least three hours before their flights, anticipating a surge in international travel during this peak period.

AirAsia Philippines offers extensive connectivity in the region, with 11 weekly flights to Narita and daily flights to Osaka in Japan, alongside daily flights to Hong Kong and nine weekly flights to Incheon, South Korea. The airline also provides two daily flights to Taipei, three daily flights to Kaohsiung, and four weekly flights to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.

As of April 2024, AirAsia Philippines serves 12 domestic and 13 international destinations. The airline, part of the AirAsia Group, has been operating as the fourth Airline Operations Center (AOC) since its launch in 2012. The AirAsia Group itself is a dominant low-cost carrier in ASEAN, with a fleet of over 200 aircraft and substantial future growth plans.

This surge in bookings underscores the growing demand for affordable international travel options during peak seasons, reaffirming AirAsia Philippines’ position as a key player in the region’s low-cost travel market.
