First Gen Corporation, a leader in clean energy, has entered into a landmark partnership with the University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB) to promote sustainability through collaborative innovation. The deal, formalized via a memorandum of agreement (MOA) signed on 15 January 2025, aims to combine UPLB’s agricultural research expertise with First Gen’s clean energy leadership to tackle pressing community resilience and sustainability challenges.
The partnership will support a broad range of initiatives, including research and development, technology transfer, and educational programs. One of the key projects will focus on enhancing seaweed farming in coastal communities in Camarines Sur, an area served by First Gen’s microgrid systems in Caramoan and Garchitorena.
First Gen vice president, Shirley H. Cruz, emphasized that this collaboration aligns with the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and global sustainability, saying that the initiatives will empower local communities while contributing to environmental goals.
The partnership also aims to position UPLB as a future-ready institution, leveraging First Gen’s resources to expand its capabilities in research, innovation, and community development. This collaboration has the potential to strengthen both organizations’ positions as leaders in sustainability and innovation, with broad commercial and social implications for the region.
First Gen, with 3,668 MW of total power capacity, continues to play a pivotal role in ensuring the Philippines’ energy security while advancing renewable energy adoption. UPLB, as part of the University of the Philippines system, is committed to driving innovation and sustainable development across various sectors.
