BPI targets gig economy with new insurance plan

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), in partnership with BPI MS Insurance, has launched BPI Freelancer, a personal accident insurance product specifically designed for freelancers, consultants, digital nomads, and self-employed professionals. The service reflects BPI’s growing focus on inclusive financial solutions for non-traditional workers who typically lack access to formal employment benefits.

As the freelance economy continues to expand — with an estimated 13 million Filipinos now working independently — the product aims to close the protection gap for this emerging sector. BPI Freelancer offers affordable and flexible accident coverage with options that can extend to dependents or small groups, making it suitable for individual freelancers, entrepreneurial teams, and even families.

Noriyuki Kobayashi, president and CEO of BPI MS Insurance, emphasized the company’s commitment to evolving alongside modern Filipino workers. “BPI Freelancer represents our deep understanding of modern Filipino needs and our commitment to helping them thrive,” Kobayashi said.

The insurance plan includes coverage for accidental death or permanent disability, daily hospitalization cash allowances of up to P1,000 for a maximum of 10 days, utility bill assistance of up to P20,000 during recovery, and motorcycle accident protection — whether as rider or passenger.

The product is available in three annual pricing tiers: P499 for the Basic Plan, P699 for the Prime Plan, and P1,099 for the Elite Plan. Clients can also enable auto-renewal to ensure continuous protection.

Maria Cristina “Ginbee” Go, head of Consumer Banking at BPI, said the product launch aligns with the bank’s broader mission of financial inclusion. “With nearly 13 million freelancers shaping our economy, we are proud to introduce an insurance product designed specifically for the modern Filipino freelancer — a reliable safety net and trusted partner to help them pursue their passions with confidence and peace of mind,” she said.

The launch of BPI Freelancer is seen as a strategic move to tap into the fast-growing gig economy while reinforcing BPI’s position as a forward-looking institution offering relevant solutions for evolving work models in the country.
