BDO Unibank Inc., the country’s largest lender and a key member of the Sy Group, has appointed veteran banker and IT strategist Rene Morta as senior vice president for IT Initiatives under the office of the bank’s president. The appointment takes effect on October 16.
Morta brings over 25 years of experience in financial services and technology, having held senior roles across multinational firms including Accenture, Citibank, Thomson Reuters, and Dell Technologies. He most recently served as Managing Director for Growth Markets and Transformation Head at Accenture Technology Center Philippines.
BDO said Morta will play a key role in driving IT initiatives at the executive level, as the bank continues to strengthen its digital infrastructure. His appointment, however, raises questions about the scope of responsibilities alongside Paul John Siy, who was promoted as BDO’s Chief Information Officer and Head of IT in February.
Siy, a recognized expert in digital banking and cybersecurity, has led BDO’s digital transformation strategy and previously held leadership roles at JPMorgan Chase, Macquarie Bank, and Citibank.
Morta’s extensive portfolio includes leadership in automation, IT operations, customer service, and solution architecture. He holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electronics and Communications Engineering from De La Salle University, where he also taught engineering.
As BDO scales its digital capabilities in an increasingly competitive financial landscape, Morta’s appointment signals continued investment in talent and technology to future-proof operations and enhance customer experience.
