SPC Power to develop 160 MWh battery projects in Iloilo, Bohol

SPC Power Corp. unit SPC Island Power Corp. (SIPC), has signed contracts to develop battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Panay and Bohol with a combined capacity of 160 megawatt-hours (MWh).

In a statement, the company said the agreements include a BESS supply deal with Beijing-based Hyperstrong Technology Co. Ltd., and an engineering, design, and construction contract with China Communications Services Philippines Corp.

The projects will feature a 100 MWh facility in Dingle, Iloilo, and a 60 MWh system in Tagbilaran City, Bohol. Project costs were not disclosed.

“These projects mark a milestone for SPC as we expand into energy storage in support of our upcoming renewable power developments,” said SIPC executive vice president James Villareal. He added that the projects aim to enhance grid stability and support the country’s shift to renewables.

Hyperstrong, which will supply the BESS, described its technology as “cutting-edge.” The initiative is in line with the Department of Energy’s policy promoting energy storage as critical to maintaining power quality and reliability amid growing renewable energy integration.

SPC currently operates multiple power facilities, including diesel and coal plants in Visayas, and has distribution investments in Cebu. As of end-July 2025, the Philippines’ on-grid ESS capacity stood at 734 MWh, with BESS projects accounting for 685 MWh.
